How long should my natural nails be before getting acrylics or gels put on?

I have very short nails (I'm a bad nail-biter!) and want to get either acrylics or gels put on with white tips. Does it matter how short/long your nails are before getting fake ones put on at a salon? Does it matter? Also, which are better - acylics or gels?
